FAQ
What kind of picture do you need to do a custom drawing?
This is a question that I wish more people would ask. I think that when people see some of my more elaborate drawings, they assume that I can translate that same quality and level of detail based on a cell phone picture. I wish this were the case but the level of detail that I’m able to achieve in a drawing is directly related to the quality of the reference picture that I receive. I do draw from cellphone pictures a lot of the time. And sometimes the pictures I’ve been given were very blurry, but all that the customer had. Typically, when drawing from a cellphone picture, I am doing a “mini” portrait. But keep in mind, not all cellphone pictures are created equal. When picking the perfect reference picture for a portrait drawing, a clear, close-up picture of the subject, with good lighting is ideal. Different animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.) have better angles than others. The more pictures that you can provide me, to weed through, the better. I can gladly provide clients with examples pictures of ‘ideal’ and ‘not ideal’ reference pictures.
How much does a custom drawing cost?
Over time I have figured out a pretty solid pricing format for “mini” portraits. Click here to see that pricing. More elaborate custom pieces are priced on a project-by-project basis, as there are many variables that affect the price (reference picture provided, size, subject matter, estimated time it will take, etc.) I work very closely with my clients to ensure that I have a good grasp on their vision, so that I can translate that onto paper.
How do I pay for my custom piece? Is there a deposit required?
I accept many forms of payment: a check, PayPal, and Venmo are my most common. I do require a nonrefundable 50% deposit for “mini” portraits before starting. The other 50% to be paid upon completion. For more custom commissions, the amount of deposit depends on the final price of that piece, determined on a project-by-project basis. Please note, I do not hand over or ship any commission unless the customer’s invoice has been fully paid.
Do you draw people?
Probably my most asked question. Just by looking at my current portfolio, one can assume that animals are my preferred subject matter. I normally do not draw people even though you might see some of my work with people in it, it is usually a piece that I have chosen to draw for myself and not a commission. There are fantastic artists out there that excel at drawing people to their likeness. I prefer to draw what I am passionate about – for now :)
How soon do I need to get on your list for Christmas orders?
Christmas can be tricky, but my rule of thumb is – better to be too early than too late. I recommend people to reach out to me regarding Christmas gifts by the end of October. I can spend anywhere from 20 hrs on a drawing to 75 hrs. The more notice I can have, the better, as I never know how many commissions I will have that time of year.
